SHELTER UPDATE

Although the times may be uncertain, we are certain that there has been a lot of good happening at the Iowa County Humane Society. We have continued to be able to help a lot of animals find forever homes, place animals with foster families, and been able to continue our mission of helping the animals of our communities. None of this would be possible without our supporters.

We are currently working to develop reopening procedures based on the recommendations put out by the Iowa County Health Department. At this time, we will continue to do business and adoptions by appointment. If you have questions regarding our current process, adoptions, or other business, please call 608-935-1381.

***** NOTICE *****

Governor Evers has announced “safer at home,” asking that all non-essential businesses close. In response to this we will be closing the shelter to the public at 5 pm Tuesday, March 24.

Please know how hard these updates are. Because of the staff and volunteers, the shelter has been thriving as more animals have found forever homes than ever before. But now is the time to keep our friends and family safe, as well as ourselves.

For the shelter this means we will continue to care for any animals that remain in the kennel, as well as caring for any strays that come from contracted communities -- every effort will be made to return strays to their owners.

Only essential staff will be at the shelter. For now that includes Joselyn, Molly and Cara. If additional staff is needed, they will be called in.
No volunteers.
No public fundraisers.
No previously scheduled events.
No meetings at the shelter.

Our first priority, as always, is placing our animals in homes by adoption. To this end we are completing the vetting process on all pending adoption applications and contacting applicants to set up appointments before close of business Tuesday.

Animals not placed by adoption will be placed in foster care for the duration of this emergency. All new foster applicants and previous foster families are being contacted today, with the goal of all animals being placed with their foster families by close of business Tuesday. References for new foster applicants are being checked according to our standard procedures. No shortcuts are being made, and animals will only be placed in approved foster homes. Putting our animals in foster care is preferable to them being in the shelter with a lack of socialization.

Animals currently receiving medical care will continue to be treated, and animals on special diets will continue to be provided with the correct food.

After Tuesday adoption applications will still be accepted and processed for approval. These approved applications will be kept on file awaiting the restoration of regular shelter operations

Most of us will find it difficult not being able to interact with our fur friends at the shelter. It will be hard and we are very sorry it’s come to this. Hopefully, with everyone's cooperation this will be  over soon and we can get back to loving and finding homes for animals.

If you would like to help, monetary donations are the most appreciated at this time.

ICHS Staff, Board, Volunteers and Animals thank you all for your continued support.

COVID-19 Pet Preparedness

While we prepare to care for our families and loved ones, remember our furry friends.
Do you have a plan in place for your pets in an emergency if you are sick or require hospitalization? Who will care for them? Will they have enough food, medication, litter, or other necessary supplies?

Although there is no current evidence that suggests the coronavirus can be transmitted to or from companion animals, it’s always a good idea to follow basic hygiene practices around animals. This includes washing your hands thoroughly throughout the day and before and after direct contact with your pets, their food or their supplies.

WE NEED YOUR HELP

There is no better time than now to become a foster! Everything you need will be provided by the Iowa County Humane Society.  With the recent updates of the COVID-19 pandemic, we feel there is an urgent need to be able to clear the shelter of animals. Our goal is to clear the shelter in the case of a state mandated lock down policy.

We are urgently looking for foster families, which can be both short or long term. If you can help us by being a foster family for a dog or cat an application can be found under our Volunteer tab.

As always, we sincerely appreciate everyone's support as we navigate these unprecedented times. If you are unable to adopt or foster at this time but would still like to provide support, please consider a donation. Donations can be now at our donate button.

We are also currently still open for adoptions by appointment only. To make an adoption appointment please call 608-935-1381, and fill out an application under our Adoption tab.

Thank you from all of us, and the animals of Iowa County!
